Is Your Cooking Oil Making Your Body Toxic?

Let's get right down to business, it's no secret that I'm not a fan of canola oil. It's a cheap oil that is genetically modified, toxic to the body, and can produce serious adverse health issues. The worst part is it's literally everywhere ... margarine, vegan butters, meatless grounds and Beyond Burgers.

This past week, Travis and I took Shelby for a day of fun and stopped at my one of my fave restaurants. I ordered a beautiful salad with quinoa, strawberries, pecans and prawns. I asked for my prawns to be cooked in olive or avocado oil instead of canola oil - easy switch! BUT then, I found out that their salad dressing (which I love) is made with canola oil! Yuck, no thank you! 

Here’s the breakdown of what to AVOID when it comes to oils and cooking!

Oils high in polyunsaturated fats should NEVER be heated, this includes corn oil, sunflower oil and safflower oil. Even a slight increase in heat and can create the compound HSE - hydrogen selenide. It’s highly reactive and unstable when heated. Think of a flammable gas.

Canola oil is even worse. A chemical, which is super toxic, called hexane, is used to break down and refine the oil. This is how manufactures make margarine or shortening. During processing it creates artificial trans fats, which are banned in certain countries! Canola oil also has been shown to lower insulin sensitivity (which can make fat loss impossible), decrease HDL levels and increase the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

So, why do manufacturers continue to make it?

….because it’s CHEAP!! Restaurants and consumers continue to buy this toxic oil, which in turn brings up demand.

Say NO to products that contain these cheap, toxic oils like Earth Balance and Beyond Burgers. Ask your fave restaurant to make a quick switch before preparing your food. Ask for avocado oil, or coconut oil ideally. Both have high smoke points, which means it’s NOT toxic to you when it’s heated above 450 degrees. Your body will thank you for making the switch.
